Residency Overview:

  • Location: Coxsackie, New York, in the Upper Hudson Valley. The Hudson Valley Writers Residency campus offers a peaceful environment surrounded by nature while still accessible by car, bus, or train from New York City and other nearby areas.

  • Duration: Each residency lasts 30 days. Two residencies are offered each year — one in January and one in August.

  • Housing & Workspace: Playwrights will be provided with private accommodations in a shared house. Each resident has their own bedroom, with access to common spaces such as a kitchen, living areas, and outdoor space. The house is designed to balance privacy for focused writing with opportunities for community and collaboration.

  • Support Provided:

    • Full room accommodations for the residency period

    • Grocery stipend

    • Travel reimbursement up to a set cap

    • Support from HVWR staff to help residents make the most of their stay

  • Expectations: Residents are asked to be respectful, responsible members of the shared household. This includes keeping common areas clean, following HVWR house policies, and fostering a supportive and safe environment for all. There are no required public presentations during the residency, but residents are encouraged to focus on writing and development of their project

  • Community: While this is primarily a time for uninterrupted work, HVWR aims to create an atmosphere of camaraderie and exchange. Residents often connect informally over meals or walks, but the structure of each day is fully up to the playwright.

Eligibility Criteria and Guidelines:

  • Open to emerging and established playwrights developing original work for the stage.

  • Projects may be at any stage of development, but if the work is not wholly original or in the public domain, applicants must secure rights for all levels of production. Documentation (e.g. signed letter from the rights holder) will be required with the application.

  • Applicants must commit to a 30-day residency at HVWR’s Hudson Valley campus.

  • Residents are expected to comply with HVWR residency guidelines, including respectful communal living, maintaining a safe and supportive environment, and following house policies.

  • Applicants must be located within driving, train, or bus distance of Coxsackie, NY.

  • One application per playwright per cycle.

  • Applications illustrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion—whether through reach, theme, or design—are strongly encouraged.

  • Please be sure to read the eligibility and other application requirements carefully, as we are unable to follow up if your application is incomplete.
